My great-grand parents moved from the Azores to the US in the early 1900s. Over the years, my grandparents and parents talked about the Azores. Summer visits to Peabody provided a peak into the Portuguese culture. Sooo, blessed with the opportunity to travel over the past few years, we headed to the Azores. I really did not know what to expect when we landed on Sao Miguel, the largest island of the small archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
The people were warm and welcoming. The scenery was spectacular and the food delicious! We toured many of the sites before traveling to other islands. Our first site – Sete Cidades – is considered one of the best views of the islands. A beautiful volcanic caldera with lagoons and small villages tucked inside. We stayed at Casa Criptomeria. Our host Sergio took us on a wonderful buggy ride around the rim of Sete Cidades stopping at the many miradouros (viewpoints). A wonderful introduction to the Azores!
