“Even before they call, I will answer: while they are still speaking, I will hear.” Isa 65:24

In our little corner of Colorado we have an unusual resident – a Trumpeter swan. We are not in its typical range. When we first moved here, there was a mating pair that produced cygnets. Several years back, the female and cygnet were hit by a car. Since then we watch our lone swan grace our local lakes all secretly hoping that a mate will arrive. Knowing that every photographer in area has photographed this swan, I have just looked and admired his beauty. This year I decided maybe I should try to get at least a few photos for posterity. He won’t live forever; and when he dies our swan population will be no more.

The turn

Driving back from a different lake, I spotted the swan across a small section of lake not too far to try to get a photo. I pulled over and just watched for a bit thinking it sure would be nice if he swam over towards me so I could get a better shot. The thought had barely skittered across my mind, when the swan turned towards my location and started swimming. I almost forgot to take photos as I watched him glide effortlessly across the lake. He not only stopped 10 feet from my vehicle, he got out of the water and stood next to my car before he slipped back in the water and swam away.

The blessing

What an amazing encounter! Absolutely sure that God had orchestrated this wonderful moment, I stayed for an extra moment thanking God for his blessings and care. He reminded me that He is always listening and answering. I have many prayers that are not answered immediately or in the way I think is best. Some prayers seem like they have never been answered. God takes moments like these to remind me that He is gracious, merciful, and always listening to me.
