Alaska, a camper, a great friend and her sister – the perfect ingredients for my first ever ‘ladies only’ trip. We wandered around the Kenai Peninsula having a fantastic time exploring this small corner of Alaska. Much of our time was spent near water. I was enthralled by the various colors of the water. In fact, my friends probably got tired of me remarking and pointing out the waters’ different colors at our different locales.

These variations probably have a technical, scientific explanation to do with the mineral content, turbidity, light refraction, bird to fish poop ratio, etc. Whether one wants to attribute the colors directly to God, or the fact the He created the circumstances that resulted in the many colors… My focus was on the great creativity and goodness of God. He made plain old water so it could be breathtakingly beautiful, calming and serene, tumultuous and moody, boundlessly incredible.

God created life dependent on water – a relatively simple molecule yet necessary for the most complex processes required to sustain life. A person can only survive a few days without hydration. Civilizations are built and destroyed over water. Many beloved Bible narrations have water as a central theme. Jesus declares Himself the ‘living water’ – declaring He is more important than even the most basic necessity of physical life.
