We started our sabbatical with a visit to Carlsbad Caverns. My first silly poem was inspired by this, our first stop.
Carlsbad Caverns
We went down down into the cave
On a path that winds and waves
It was dark and it was damp
We wondered if we would see a bat
His glorious creation does not stop above ground
Secret beauty is hiding deep deep down
Stalagmites and stalactites drip and grow
Strange and wondrous shapes offer a show
If you’re brave and courageous and stay until night
Thousands upon thousands will take flight
They swoop and they swirl to catch bugs in the dark
With echo location to catch their mark
Then along came a spider to steal the show
Hairy and scary he crawled into a row
No longer watching the bats’ tornadic display
The crowds’ short attention turned to see Hairy play
But instead he stopped short finding a seat
And joined the quiet throng to watch the batty feat
